More About John
Stephanie has asked me to write a few words about my work but I struggle to put this into words.
I don’t really know what my pottery is all about and I doubt if many potters do. We all talk about ideals and influences but in the end it is something about clay that captivates us. Something about seeing, handling, and using beautiful pots that inspires us to want to be part of this. Functional pots that you need to use over and over and become part of our lives are what inspires me. This is what makes me want to try and capture these qualities in my pots.
Using local materials, kickwheels and woodfiring I hope allows me to chase the qualities of pots that I admire. It’s not a straight forward predictable process. My local clay body is by no means perfect and wood ash and rock glazes can be unpredictable. Woodfiring adds another unknown, but when it all comes together its worth it.
