More About Geoff
My work reflects my pre-occupation with exploring and developing local raw materials wherever possible, trying to bring out and enhance their inherent qualities.
Current work is a synthesis of technology, raw materials and various production methods (throwing, slip casting and slab building). The pots combine a porcelain body (carved) with ash, blue and green celadon, copper red and chun glazes. The pale greens of both celadon and ash glazes contrast with the warm flashes from the wood kiln on the porcelain body generated by the impurities in the materials reacting to the vageries of wood firing to create a very personal means of expression.
In the last few years I have started to revisit stoneware and iron bearing glazes. This has been promted by the use of a local rock which forms the basis of most of the darker glazes and is used in the stoneware body as a flux.
